Information for Binghamton University Employers

Effective October 13, 2004, international students in F-1 non-immigrant status who wish to apply for a Social Security Number must now show proof of employment, or evidence of a job offer, at the time they submit their Social Security Number application.

If you have hired or intend to hire an international student in F-1 status, the link below will take you to a form letter that meets Social Security Administration requirements for evidence that an international student is employed on-campus at Binghamton University, or has an offer of on-campus employment. This letter is required in order for a student in F-1 non-immigrant status to apply for a Social Security Number.

Please note the following:

If the F-1 student has been issued a funding letter as a teaching assistant or graduate assistant, and the letter contains the approved wording provided by the Graduate School, no additional letter is needed provided that the funding letter is printed on department stationery and has an original signature.

F-1 students who are Research Foundation employees, either as Research Assistants or other Research Foundation job titles must obtain their employment letter from the Research Foundation Personnel Payroll Office, Couper Administration Building 208, regardless of what department or program employs them.

The student should then bring the funding letter to the Office of International Student and Scholar Services to be countersigned on the reverse side with the ISSS staff member's printed name, telephone number, signature and date. This is also a Social Security Administration requirement.
