3. Attention Summer Graduates: File Your OPT Applications BEFORE July 30 If Possible!

The ISSS reminds Summer 2007 F-1 graduates who have not yet filed for Optional Practical Training (OPT) but plan to do so that it is recommended that you file prior to July 30, 2007 to avoid the large fee increase. US Citizenship and Immigration Services(USCIS) currently charges $180 to process an OPT application. As of July 30, 2007, the processing fee increases to $340. Any applications or petitions postmarked or otherwise filed with USCIS on or after July 30, 2007 must include the new fee. Please note that when you bring your OPT documents to the ISSS, it takes the ISSS 7-10 days to process the forms before they are ready for you to pick up and mail to USCIS. So you are encouraged to plan ahead .

Summer graduates who are applying for OPT post-graduation may file their applications up to 120 days prior to the start date of their OPT, and such students may request a start date of as late as October 16, 2007. OPT applications from summer graduates MUST be received at the USCIS Service Center before August 17, 2007, which is the degree conferral date for Summer graduates. Questions?
