4. Captain James Yee to Speak on Diversity and Social Justice September 25
Binghamton University will host a program entitled Dialogues on Diversity and Social Justice on Tuesday, September 25 at 7:00pm in the Watters Theatre, Fine Arts Building. The guest speaker will be Captain James Yee. Event participants are invited to dialogue on the challenges of protecting both our national security and civil liberties after Yee’s presentation.
The event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
Yee is a West Point graduate who served as the Muslim Chaplain at Guantanamo Bay Prison's Camp Delta, where he led prayer services and counseled detainees. While ministering to prisoners, Yee advised the commanders of the camp on detainee religious practices and objected to the cruel and degrading abuses to which the prisoners were subjected.
In 2003 Yee made headlines when he was accused of spying, espionage, and aiding the alleged Taliban and Al-Qaeda prisoners. He was held in solitary confinement 76 days and subjected to the same sensory deprivation techniques that were being used against the same prisoners he had been ministering to. The case was later dropped and now Yee is speaking publicly about his experience. Yee’s account of his Guantanamo experience is detailed in his book For God And Country: Faith and Patriotism Under Fire.
Sponsoring this event are the Multicultural Resource Center (MRC), the Catholic Student/Newman Association, Harpur College Dean’s Office, Hillel @ Binghamton/the Jewish Student Union, and the Muslim Student Association.

6. Did You Forget to Turn In Your I-94 Card During Your Last Trip Abroad?Sometimes, when a student departs the United States, the airline forgets to collect the white I-94 card. Or, perhaps you traveled through a land port or sea port and the I-94 card was not collected. It is essential that I-94 cards be turned in to the appropriate US federal agency so that your departure is correctly reported. Failure to do so could cause consequences during your next trip back to the United States.
The US Department of Customs and Border Protection provides specific information for mailing the I-94 card back to the U.S. for processing. We have taken that information and placed it on our website, in the “Publications” section, for convenient viewing. The article may be viewed at: http://isss.binghamton.edu/pubs/forgoturnI94.html
7. International Students and Arrests
Although it is not a pleasant subject, there are a few situations where an international student might be arrested in the United States and charged with a crime. Common misdemeanor or felony arrests can include theft, drunk driving, shoplifting (stealing goods from a store without paying for them) and drug possession (with or without intent to sell).
The ISSS has published an article on its website that discusses the consequences such arrests can create with a student’s U.S. immigration status, even if the charges themselves are dismissed or reduced. The article may be viewed at: http://isss.binghamton.edu/pubs/intstudarrst.html
