MONDAY, AUGUST 20, 2007

9:00am Health Services Check-in
University Health Services – East Access Road
All international students are required to check in with staff from Binghamton University’s Health Services.  If you have not yet submitted your Health Form, please bring it to University Health Services so it can be reviewed.  International students who require PPD testing for TB screening will receive the PPD test today. Event is continuous until 2:30pm.

10:00am Orientation Program Check-in
University Union Old Union Hall
Register for orientation, obtain schedule of events, meal tickets, residence hall assignments and open a bank account.  Parent and family members accompanying you can also check-in at this time.  Undergraduate students living on campus may move into their residence hall rooms.  Event is continuous until 2:30pm.

Introductions of International Student and Scholar Services staff, Leadership Volunteers, Orientation Assistants and participants. Overview of orientation program and a discussion of life at the University and in the U.S.

4:00pm    Information Meeting for Parents and Family Members
Hinman Commons, Hinman College
Meet with Ellen H. Badger, director of the Office of International Student and Scholar Services and representatives of other student services offices. Learn about student life at Binghamton University, and the academic support services available to assist your student.

6:00pm Welcome Dinner (orientation meal ticket required)

Greetings from Elizabeth Carter, Interim Assistant Vice-President, Student Services.  Jennifer Brownstein, Director of the English as a Second Language Program, will answer questions regarding Wednesday's English Language exam.

9:30am   Federal Regulations That You Need to Know – All Students Must Attend
Watters Theatre, Fine Arts Building

Ellen H. Badger, Director of International Student and Scholar Services, Karen Keefe-Guzikowski, Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services, and Amelia Shafer, International Student Advisor, will explain the rules for maintaining legal status in the U.S., SEVIS responsibilities, the rules governing on and off campus employment and US Income Tax requirements for international students.

This is a “How To Get Good Grades” strategy and planning session. Learn what is expected of you academically.

Representatives of Student Cultural Organizations and student governance will be available to meet with you and tell you about their group and its activities.  Sign up to participate in International Student Festival Activities taking place in September 2007.      
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22, 2007

If you are taking the English Language Proficiency Examination at 9:00am, you will want to arrive at 8:00am for breakfast, so you have enough time to eat and arrive on time for the exam.

9:00am    English Language Proficiency Examination

All international students whose native language is not English are required to take this diagnostic examination.  Binghamton University accepts both the TOEFL and IELTS exams.

  1. Students with TOEFL scores of 625 (263 on the computer based test, 106 –108 on the internet based test) or higher along with students with TOEFL scores of 600 (250 on the computer based test, 100 on the internet based test) or higher who were schooled in an English-medium institution do not have to take the examination. 
  2. Students with a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with no individual band below 5.0) do not have to take the examination
  3. MBA students are also exempt from taking the exam because of their program’s required communication course. 

10:00am Bureaucratic Essentials – All Students Must Attend

(Be sure to bring your immigration documents, passport and green New Student Data Form to this event!)
This event is continuous until 2:30pm. Plan on being at this event for at least 1.5 hours.

International Student and Scholar Services:  Your passport and visa documents will be examined to be sure that all of your papers are in good order.  The ISSS will sign page 3 of your I-20 form or page 1 of your DS-2019 to verify your enrollment.  The green, New Student Data Form will be collected.  Be sure you have completed both sides of the form.  Your passport and visa documents will be photocopied. 
Health Insurance: A representative from the SUNY International Student Health and Accident Insurance Program will be available to answer questions.
Funded Graduate Student Health Insurance Program: Funded Graduate Students will want to sign up for their health insurance benefits.
M&T Bank Sign Up: Arrange for a bank account with M&T bank.
Social Security Number: Beginning at 11:00am, representative from the SSA will be available to accept Social Security applications from students in F-1 or J-1 visa status who are employed or have a job offer. Letters of Ineligibility will be available for students who need one.
Off Campus College: Information on OCC services, including Off Campus College Transport (blue buses), OCC Legal Clinic, and OCC off-campus housing services.

10:00am Health Services Follow-Up – PPD Test
University Health Services – East Access Rd.

Health Services staff and public health nurses from the Broome County Health Department   will be available to assist those students who received a PPD skin test on Monday, August 20th. Event continues until 2:00pm.

1:00pm Beginnings Orientation Begins for All Undergraduate Students
Schedule to be announced August 10, 2007
All undergraduate students will attend Beginnings Orientation, the campus wide program for new students. As part of this program you will have the opportunity to meet US citizen students, meet with academic advisors and register for your courses.

This examination time is for international students unable to take the examination Wednesday, August 22.
